Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. Matthew 8:8

REFLECTION

I am worthy of the love of God; I am his creature and he has redeemed me.

As human beings, we have all experienced a sense of unworthiness when looking at our own existence within the context of God’s love. As a woman with your feminine nature, you participate in this attribute of God in a special way — you have the gift of seeing the goodness and dignity of those around you, even when they cannot see it themselves.

However, when you look at yourself it often becomes difficult for you to see your own goodness and dignity. A series of questions seem to arise in your heart and draw a dark picture within you.  Do you feel you are prone to insecurity? Have you ever felt like you are not enough? Do you play down the good things that you do? Do you minimize the love that you are capable of? Do  you sometimes think that you are undeserving? Does your past weigh you down? Do you feel unworthy?

I want to reflect for a moment on the God who has thought about you from all eternity, and how one day he dreamed of your existence, with all of your qualities and also with all of your faults. You are precious in his eyes just as he created you, precisely as you are. You are worthy because you were born from his heart.

Christ became man and gave his life for you as you are, so that you could spend your life in his presence for eternity. You are worthy because you have been bought with the blood of Jesus.

God looks into the depths of your heart; nothing escapes him. He knows each one of your thoughts, the good and the bad. He is close to you in your falls, and he is there to lift you up. He walks at your side, offering his hand and his support. And together with you, he looks at the horizon with the hopes and dreams which allow you to open yourself to the future.  You are worthy because Jesus is your best friend and companion.

The way that you read your own life’s story is incomplete sometimes, with limitations and errors. You have written your story, and others have collaborated, some positively and others perhaps not so much. What you can be sure of is that your dignity does not depend on how bright the chapters of your life are.

If we compare our life to a house, we discover rooms, stairs, doors, and windows, but above all, memories, images, paintings and photographs that reflect and bring to mind our own story.

When we think of God and of his presence throughout the interwoven chapters of our life, we see him as a guest, whom we welcome into our house, but often without allowing him to see the messiest, darkest, or dirtiest parts.

Have you stopped to consider that it is God who should teach you about the house of your life? In fact, I would dare to say that we are guests in our own lives and that in reality, God is the owner of the house. We need to be guided by him, with freedom and humility, letting him teach us room by room, memory after memory, giving meaning to what so we so often hide away for fear of not being worthy.

Remember this well, there is a dress that God offers you when he guides your life and shows you the story of your heart: the dress of dignity.

TEXT FOR MEDITATION

You have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. (taken from Eucharistic Prayer II of the Mass)

JOURNEY / CHALLENGE

Find a moment of silence to enter into prayer. When you are in the presence of God, let yourself be taken by his hand and together with him, review the main memories of your life – the positive ones and the negative ones. Thank him for the positive ones and let God explain the negative ones, and heal them.

PRAYER

O God, who manifest your almighty power above all by pardoning and showing mercy, bestow, we pray, your grace abundantly upon us and make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasures of heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ (Collect prayer of Sunday Mass XXVI of ordinary time)
